Horrible names for ships.

There's currently a freighter named Titanic that operates on rivers and canals, mostly in France. She's in the running for Ugly Ship of the Year. There used to be a small tanker called Titanic. Michael Standart saw her at sea years ago.

I once saw a small trimaran called Tritanic, complete with a drawing of a sinking liner on her bow. There may be more.
The one picture that I remember was of a ship that looked liked a small tramp steamer. But just to show you what I know about it I always thought the term tramp steamer was just slang for old beat up cargo ship. Not a class of ship determined by how they got and delivered cargo...not set schedule ect ect/

WW2 German submarine U-552 was nicknamed Roter Teufel (Red Devil) to commemorate its phonomenal kill rate. Reportedly, they had a picture of a grinning Devil painted in red on the conning tower. Launched in September 1940, it lasted through the war and survived, but was scuttled in April 1945 to prevent it falling into Allied hands.

It's a book about the power systems of the large liners...the history. I doubt it would it would cover navy ships like the Terror. But maybe it goes into the real early history of steam power. But if it doesn't that's ok. I'm sure it will be a good book regardless. The title I'll post below. Like you I have always found the Franklin expedition a fascinating story. Not just the ships and getting stuck in the ice and their attempt to hike out but of some of the side stories too. I'm sure your well aware about how they were one of first to stock canned goods for their expedition. In those days cans were sealed with lead. Some historians attribute that to their erratic behavior toward the end. Lead poisoning can cause a form insanity. Similar to what many historians account the erratic behavior of the upper class of the Romans. Cooking in pewter (lead alloy) utensils and soaking their wine in lead to sweeten it up. But I digress the book is:

P.S...I have no self discipline when it comes to buying books. It's like eating peanuts with me. In the last 2 weeks I've ordered 3 books. The one above, Mr Halperns latest book (at least I think it's his latest) and one I doubt anyone here would be interested in with the exception of Arun and our mutual interest in the Cold War. Plus I have Clifford Ismay's book about Bruce Ismay on my list too. Cheers.
For when you get the book munchies.... add peanuts and cashews together... In saying that, a horrible name for a ship would be PEANUT

Yes that would be a pretty horrible name for a ship...*L*. Off topic but since were talking peanuts...when I was a kid many people including myself used to dump a bag of peanuts into a bottle of RC cola and drink it that way and eat the peanuts. Does anybody remember doing that or was it just a weird Arizona fad at the time?

That ship you're referring to (the Tramp Steamer) is the Titanian, which came into Titanic cultural infamy in 1935. Quite a bit already over Encyclopedia-Titanica about her. She came a gutser in 1947

Definitely an Arizona fad... never heard of that anywhere before! Coke & Peanuts ?..... Horrible name for a yacht (to stay slightly on topic!)... Another weird peanut thing.... As far as know am the only one anywhere who knows how to successfully mix Peanuts & Honey 50/50 (makes an awesome spread)... Popcorn & peanuts was always a good home movie munchie when me and lads fished out TITANIC

Ok. Thanks for the info. All I remember was a ship that looked like it was from the 1930's or 40's. A small cargo ship that looked pretty run down to me. Something that looked like it plied the back waters of the Amazon or Congo rivers. But it had S.S. Titanic on it. And I remember thinking wow talk about testing fate or whatever.

I've eaten these my entire life. Had a box the other day. I think the S.S. Cracker Jack would be a good name for a ship. It's also the slang name for the US Navy uniform.

Wow... no one here in NZ sells a popcorn & peanuts snack, we have to make it ourselves. Popcorn maker comes out, blow them up, a huge bowl... add peanuts and add condiments - usually salty. A more "maritime" Cracker Jack would have to be "sea salt" flavour, surely?
Cracker Jack also cultural slang for "hundy percent", primo", "top condition" awesome". So, yes agree would be an absolutely fantastic name for a Navy ship

I went and looked it up. Cracker Jacks have been around for over 120 years. Like I said before I've been eating them since my earliest days. At the Dollar Store they come in a 3 pack. 3 boxes for $1.25...inflation you know. Cheers.
