Question Did the steering wheel have to be turned to the left for the ordered Hard starboard?

I know the commands are from the sailing age, but I don't know if the steering wheel was turned in the direction of the turn or against it?

    Tiller/Rudder steering-gears

Anybody knows who was/were the spur-wheels manufacturer(s) (tiller)? Especially steering gears? I read in Anton Gill / TITANIC book that some parts could have been made by the French manufacturer CITROËN (who in 1910’s has a gear engineering & factory in Paris - named MORS Company).

    Steering commands.

What kind of measurements did they use for helm orders other than midships, hard-a-starboard and hard-a-port? Did they use degrees of rudder angle like on modern ships? I heard or read somewhere that they used the wheel spokes as a measure of how far over the helm was.

This is my first time posting and I have a question that may sound stupid to some of you; I was just wondering what kind of technology was used to turn the rudder on the Titanic? I would really appreciate any help. Thanks, Brent D.
