Titanic cross stitch

Hi folks, if anyone is interested, I have a titanic cross stitch pattern I can share. I did a customized one on some software I got. I have to warn though, it's huge, at 14 count, it's about a meter long and 1.5 m high. It has about 65 colours and will take approx the rest of my life to finish. Can't say how good the program is yet as I haven't done enough, but I can put the pattern up on our web server if anyone is interested. The image was a Ken Marshall painting of a stern view.

Hi Kathy,

I'm interested in seeing this!

Best regards,

Ok, I am in Virginia visiting friends till Wed. and then when I get home, I'll upload the files. I should tell you a bit more. There are a bunch of programs which will generate these patterns, none of them cheap. So, being cheap myself, I wanted to try them out before buying them. So I got the trial version, which doesn't has the save feature disabled. So, I, not to be deterred, I used screen captures to grab the pattern. It came out nice and is very easy to read. The grid goes from a to m across the top, and 1 to 13 down, as I said, it's large! I've done a few small areas, and it looks pretty good, and I started from a large clear image so it would get good detail, but this is the first I've tried the program. I'll also upload the colour image I used to make it (I volunteer for a freenet and so disk space is free, and I run my own domain.)

Cheers!

Hello All,

I attempted to post to this thread earlier, however to no avail.

My dear Mother sent to me for X-Mas a completed
Titanic cross stitch (W/frame & matt). It is a brilliant dockside rendering, not a Marshall.
Very accurate in it' depiction...gold band, dummy stack, et al.

My roomate (female) who also is a crafter exclaimed upon seeing my X-Mas gift..."Your Mother must have great eyesight and lots of patience, I could never have done that".

Any others attempt this Titanic cross stitch endeavor? It really is a beautiful piece!

I'm in some remote place they call Lancaster Virginia. It's towards the eastern side of the state.

I actually downloaded 3 cross stitch programs, one looked crappy. The other two look promising (except it forces me to keep microsoft around, I normally run only linux.)

I have a kit I bought from a place in the UK It is of one of the ads they printed then. I am nearly finished that, and though there are probably copyright issues, I'll share that one too. And, since I'm in the sharing mood, I've tons of Titanic wallpaper for the computer (it will work on ms or linux.) I like playing with graphics.

The only thing I won't share, is the woodburned plaques of Titanic I've done cause it took a long, long time

I'm starting one of the gr.staircase now.

Hey folks, sorry for the absence, I got sick on my return to Pa. and just now getting over it. I uploaded the pattern images to http://starryskies.com/titanic along with the legend (for the symbols and colours) and the image I made the pattern from. The finished size is supposed to be like 40 inches by 30 (I told you it was big!) The grid runs a through m horizontally and 1 thru 13 from top to bottom. Note two important things: 1) some of the symbols are similar, so familiarize yourself with them, and 2) there is an overlap on some of the patterns. If you look at a pattern image, you'll see it's further subdivided into blocks of 10 squares (each one a stitch.) The portion of the pattern that is NOT overlapped on each image is 4 blocks wide and 2 blocks down. Some of the images are cropped but most overlap a bit, I find this useful for reference, but bemindful of it. The blocks of ten are bolder lines than the rest. I hope that makes sense, it's the way the program makes the pattern. I'm sorry if that's confusing, but when I did this I hadn't thought about sharing it with anyone, you know how it is, our friends and family think we are stark raving mad over Titanic anyway

Please don't hesitate to ask questions, my private email is kmiles@starryskies.com I'll help you all I can.
And, again, sorry for the delay.

Oops, forgot to add that the size I gave you is for 14 count. And, it would look best if done on a light blue cross stitch fabric. And, while I'm in remembering mode

the images are all .png files, as they are not lossy like jpg's, any image program ought to work on them.

Kathy- just found this thread- am so excited- could not get your link to display above. Have been doing Titanic cross-stitch for a long time. I just used plain old graph paper and colored markers to map it out. I forget whether Aida or Hardanger cloth is the 14 squares per inch. There is an 18 square which will make you blind after awhile. Mostly I have done Titanic "mottos" -memorable things said aboard ship. I did a broadside port view of the ship with the red White Star burgee above for Debbie Reynolds when she was touring in Unsinkable Molly Brown and filled it with old hatpins. It was her 63rd birthday and the show was in New Haven at the Shubert. It was such a thrill giving it to her -and a Titanic book for her son Todd who is a big Titanic scholar. Another cross stitch was the text to Eternal Father strong to save. Woodburning- now there's something different! Have stencilled Titanic on canvas floorcloths using mylar to cut out patterns(multi color -layered), painted door panels, tennis shoes and clothing, bathmats and a shower curtain, and stencilled the words of Titanic-related songs around the chair rail of a wall. Hope you can post a photo of all your great artwork. Have wanted to try that reverse painting on glass.

Shelley, try getting to the site again, it hasn't been down. I volunteer for the freenet it's on. But we do get connectivity donated from a local university and sometimes it flakes out (I know, I run the help desk and hear about it.)
Aida is the 14 count I am speaking about. I can't do much smaller than that, as I have an eye problem. When I do detail on my woodburned stuff, I use a magnifying glass for tiny stuff. It's the pattern of the cross stitch fabric that drives my eyes nuts. I plan on doing a few more patterns, I downloaded about 4 programs which generate them and I want to find out which does the best job. What I have done on this project looks ok, but so far it's just been sky and I started one funnel (which looks very good.)
Let me know if you still can't get to the website.

Hi, Kathy.

Could you please clarify two things for the simple minded folk. What brand of thread are the listed colors for? I'm guessing DMC, but it would be nice to know if it's something else. And are the pattern bits arranged left to right, top to bottom, or is it t'other way 'round? Yes, yes, if one actually puts them together and takes a good LOOK, it will be obvious, but I'd rather be certain beforehand.

I've never done counted cross stitch before, and, of course, this piece is ambitious. But I'll try anything that involes a needle and a length of thread-- and a challenge!

Yes, sorry it is DMC, that's the only brand I can get around here. The grid goes from a to m across the top from left to right, and from 1 to 13 from top to bottom. So, 1a would be top left corner. What I did, because this thing is so huge, was to use a pencil and mark off every twenty squares across and down the fabric. And, be mindful what I said about overlapping colunns and rows. If I had had the time I would have cropped those images, but I actully find the overlap useful for reference, you just have to remember the overlap. Next pattern I make (if I'm deranged enough to do this again,) I'll save both the symbol pattern and the coloured square pattern so it's easier to see how things go.
