Andy,the Thayer family situation can look rather confusing. There were 4 generations of Thayers each having a John Borland Thayer. It was JBT III and his son JBT IV who travelled on Titanic. JBT III died in the sinking, aged 48 - he would have been 49 later that month. He and his wife, Marian, had 4 children: 2 sons and 2 daughters. I think ET has it almost entirely right - only a very minor slip over JBT III's age. I hope you, and perhaps others, will now be less confused.
