In April 1912 Gardner was serving as an able seaman aboard the eastward-bound voyage of the Carpathia when that ship rescued the survivors of the Titanic.
George was an able seaman on the Carpathia which went to the rescue of the Titanic. For this he received a bronze medal, officers received silver & gold medals. He was my grandfather and as far as I know his career had always been in the Merchant Navy. He married a Catherine Winters in Liverpool and had 4 daughters. Catherine also gave birth to sons but unfortunately none lived passed the age of 2yrs as a result of Diptheria. He wrote a short summary in a notebook of the rescue of The Titanic which the family still own. This has been displayed in the Liverpool Maritime Museum at one point in the 1980's
