Samuel Ward Stanton

The Hudson River steamer for which Stanton was preparing by visiting the Alhambra was the Washington Irving, not the Knickerbocker. The boat was, indeed, built in 1912 and featured a writing room whose decoration was based on the Alhambra. The room was designed by Louis O. Keil; Stanton was to paint appropriate paintings to decorate the space as well as other areas of the vessel.
