A Captain's Career

The Article ET Research A Captain's Career states that Captains Smith received an annual salary of $6, 250 plus an additional $41,000 bonus if no ship under his command was involved in any accident during the year.

While I am not saying that the bonus figure is wrong, or important, it does seem excessive to me in proportion to his salary, which was a very generous one in those days.

Could the bonus figure be corroborated, or is it, perhaps, a typographical error.

Yes, that's a typo - $40,000 out! If awarded, the bonus was $1000. Still a handy sum - four times the annual earnings of the average crew member.
