'Jonkheer' is a Dutch honorific of nobility equivalent to 'Esquire' in England and 'Junker' in Germany.

Esquire (abbreviation: jhr) is a noble predicate in the Netherlands and titled in Belgium (judgment of the Court of Cassation, 1927). Mr Plate , with  jhr Reuchlin the other  co-founder of The Holland America Line, was invited for the Titanic Voyage,due to a problem in his family, Mr Plate could not go, and Jhr Reuchlin replaced him at the last moment

Correction Johan was the son of founder Otto Reuchlin, he was also director of the HAL

The family Reuchlin was ennobled by Royal Consent in 1880 with the (minor) title of jonkheer in style and precedence  comparable to the British baronet, except in the sense that the jonkheer (jonkvrouw) is inheritable by all issue, while the baronet is always the male primogenitor of the family.
