My great uncle was born in India, not Hampshire, and his first English home was the Isle of Wight, when his father was posted to Parkhurst Barracks
With regards to John Joseph Shea (My Great Uncle x2 ) he was born at the Parkhurst Barracks on the Isle of Wight, his Mother was Margaret Shea (nee Moynan). She died a number of days after giving birth to John. Sarah Jane who you refer to as John's Mother was actually his step Mother, she married John's Father also John in 1874, 2 years after John Joseph's birth.
