Lifeboat names

Why weren't the lifeboats given names instead of numbers? I think they should have been named on a ship of this importance level. Maybe named them after US states like the New York, the Pennsylvania, etc. Would be easier to keep track of them with names.

it's easier to shout into lifeboat 4 in an emergency than to shout into lifeboat New York. though I do think it would be cool to have names for the life boats

Another idea was/is to give the port side boats women's names and the starboard side men's names. I just think numbers are really boring.

"Cool"? "Boring"? IMO those are silly and immature statements considering what lifeboats in general were meant for. Did you expect a potential survivor to prefer to be saved on Emily Rose rather than Nigel Lee?

It is like suggesting giving neighborhood fireplugs names because that's "cool".
