I am pretty sure it is safe to say much checking was done by people in high places-right on up to President Taft, and of course Archie's grief-stricken brothers Lewis and Edward. I feel certain that Maj. Butt's body was not recovered at any point. He was rather distinctive-looking, and his pocket contents would have revealed a good deal towards establishing a positive identification.
