The current operators of the Queen Mary have filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection. According to the article, this will not affect the daily operations of the ship. That, IMHO, “will remain to be seen”.

The City of Long Beach, however, is determined to keep the Queen Mary, since she is now an established landmark.

Given the nature of the dispute, and the sum involved, filing for a Chapter 11 business reorganization, is probably a good move by the Queen's operators. This allows them to protect their leasehold interest in the ship and (hopefully) work out a repayment plan if they suffer an adverse ruling on the rent dispute issue.

It is disappointing to read, though, about the Long Beach "community activists" already using the dispute as part of a campaign against the ship.
