Good question. Quite a few numbers have been kicked around over the years, and the initial confusion which followed the sinking itself was no help. If you go to Titanic Research, you'll find Lester Mitcham's outstanding "The Statistics of the Disaster" where he concluded that there were 712 survivors. In light of how carefully he did his math, I'm inclined to agree with him.
