We have a copy of Harry Jenner's "Particulars of engagement" and his wages are stated as £4 5s 0d which is more than most of the stewards received. So although he is only listed as "Second Class Saloon Steward" he was presumably second in command as he was listed second on the list of after the Chief second class steward Mr Hardy.
