Hi All,

We all know that the band were not officially part of the crew but were listed as 2nd Class Passengers and were berthed as such. The Restaurant staff were also not crew and according to some were kept from the boats by the infamous gates overused in movies. My question revolves around Gym Instructor TW McCauley and Squash Instructor Fred Wright. Are they listed as official crew or passengers? Where were their staterooms? I've never seen them listed on any deck plans. If I overlooked it somewhere, I apologize.

Both are thankfully known. Thomas W. McCawley as the ship’s physical instructor was in the eight dormitory on E-deck on the port side. This dormitory he shared with 5 first class bath stewards (Hebert George Broom, Thomas Edgar Major, Frank Hebert Morris, Thomas Frederick Cohen Pennal and Samuel James Rule), 6 first class boots/cleaning stewards (Chief boots/cleaning steward Sydney Frederick Stebbings, First class boots/cleaning stewards Alfred James Fellowes Elgar John Guy, Cecil Jackson William Henry Rattenbury and John Scott), 6 pantryman assigned to the first class pantry on D-deck (considering there are 9 pantrymen who could have stayed here I am not certain about who stayed where) and lastly the ship’s bugler Steward Percy William Fletcher

Wright had it better than McCawley as he had a comfortable cabin down on F-deck which he shared with the Baggage steward, Edward Bessant. It’s listed as the S.R.C Prof, meaning Squash Racquet Court Professional.

Hi Thomas,

One follow up, is there any reason/indication why Wright might be favored over McCauley in terms of cabin allocation or was it just a random occurrence? I know this is very minute and American but I'm really interested why White Star did what they did in all matters, just curious. Thanks Thomas
