Answered What happened to the Arapahoe that sent the SOS?

G'day, Elaine!

She broke her propeller shaft somewhere off Cape Hatteras. Very embarrassing! She got a tow to safety.

Slavonia hit a reef off the Azores about two months before and some sources credit her with sending the first SOS. The key thing about the Slavonia incident is that everybody was rescued and this contributed to the feeling that radio and properly built ships had the ocean beaten. Never tempt Poseidon, or he'll stick his trident where you won't enjoy it!
