Endstation Eismeer : Schweiz—Titanic—Amerika

Description

On April 14, 1912, the Titanic sank in the Atlantic, with numerous passengers and employees from Switzerland on board: for example, the Swiss tennis champion, the chairman of the board of directors of the ‘Swiss Bankverein’, who, together with a lawyer, prosecuted the bankrupt of an embroidery factory in Arbon, who had moved to America. The daughter of a Zurich textile manufacturer wanted to meet her groom in New York, and a store clerk at a Zurich department store who emigrated to America with his family like several other Swiss. In addition to a Valais resident who cooked for the first class as deputy chef, a man from Lucerne who was responsible for the ice cream and several waiters and busboys from Poschiavo, Brissago and the Bleniotal worked in the Titanic’s kitchen.

Stefan Ineichen links the stories of all these passengers, right down to their ramifications, to create a fascinating picture of society before the First World War, illustrated with contemporary coloured postcards.
