Explore Titanic: Breathtaking New Pictures, Recreated with Digital Technology

Boys and girls will be enthralled by this dramatic pictorial history of the great ocean liner R.M.S. Titanic, and its fateful sinking in the North Atlantic. Approximately 125 photos and illustrations in color and black and white–including 12 astonishing 3D-rendered graphics–tell the Titanic’s story, from its 1911 launching at the Belfast shipyard to its tragic destruction on April 15, 1912 during its maiden Atlantic crossing. Young readers will see faithful reproductions of both exterior and interior ship’s details, from the Boiler Room and Engine Room far below decks to the luxury passengers’ cabins and the ship’s grand ballroom. Among the 3D-rendered artworks are two remarkable double-gatefold illustrations

  • The Titanic under steam
  • A cutaway diagram of the ship
  • The Grand Staircase in First Class
  • A First Class Cabin “Parlor Suite”
  • The Bridge and Wheelhouse
  • The First Class Dining Room
  • Second Class Promenade Deck
  • The Grand Staircase flooding as the ship sinks . . . and more

The end product of meticulous research, this book’s 3D-rendered artwork virtually draws readers aboard the ship, employing painstakingly realistic facsimiles of details both large and small. Enclosed with this unusual book is a CD-ROM that walks viewers through the ship’s interior from stem to stern, showing hundreds of details. Viewers can zoom in and out to examine details more closely, and they can move around inside cabin interiors in a way that heightens the illusion of realism.

Welcome Aboard

You are standing before the Grand Central Staircase in first class. This impressive sweep of stairs greeted first-class passengers as they came down from the Boat Deck into the luxurious interior of the ship.

Dinner is Served

Welcome to the First-Class Dining Saloon. At 115’ feet long, it could sit 532 diners. Dinner consisted of up to 11 courses, each served with a different wine.

In Steerage

Steerage is another name for third class. Third-class cabins were on the lower decks, toward the bow and stern, and closer to the noise of the engines. Although small, they were clean and modern, with two bunk beds, electric light and heating.

The Crew

You are standing in the wheelhouse, where the helmsman steered the ship. Titanic sailed with a crew of 944. Everything on the Titanic was driven by steam power, from the ship’s propellers to the lights. Steam was provided by 29 massive boilers and 162 coal-burning furnaces.

Disaster Strikes

On Sunday, April 14 at 11:40 pm, a lookout in the crow’s nest saw a dark object directly ahead. He rang his warning bell, shown above, three times and called the bridge, saying “Iceberg straight ahead!” Titanic slowly turned, but only enough to avoid a head-on collision. After an agonizing 37 seconds, the ship smashed into the iceberg along her starboard side.

Last Moments

You are looking down at the Grand Central Staircase as the waters rise step by step. In a few moments the lights will go out, and water from the deck above will smash through the glass dome overhead flooding the entire space. All told, 1,517 lives were lost in the frigid waters of the North Atlantic.
