An ex-Naval man named Joseph George Scarrott, aged 35, described as a seaman, of Southampton, pleaded guilty to bigamy, and the allegation was that on September 15th, 1907, went through a form of marriage with Agnes Laura Payne, his former wife, Annie Elizabeth Scarrott, to whom he was married at Portsmouth August 12th, 1898, being alive.

His explanation was that he separated several times from his wife, and his attempts to reclaim her were of no avail. Then he wanted a home, and having made the acquaintance of Miss Payne, married her, although at that time she was not a prudent woman.

The accused was given very good character, and the Judge sentenced him to only a month’s imprisonment.
