Hubert Hutchinson Newbold was born in Liverpool, England on 15 April 1891, being baptised on 7 May in St Margaret’s Church. He was one of three children born to George Hubert Newbold, a railway clerk, and Annie Weightman.

Initially pursuing a career on the railways like his father, Newbold later went to sea around 1911, serving aboard the Saxonia. That same year the Newbold family lived at 72 Stuart Road in Waterloo, Liverpool but Hubert was not listed at the time, perhaps at sea. 

In April 1912 Newbold was serving as a waiter aboard the eastward-bound voyage of the Carpathia when that ship rescued the survivors of the Titanic. The rescue occurred on the morning of his 21st birthday.

Following the Titanic disaster, Newbold continued to work at sea, serving with the merchant fleet during WWI; during peacetime, he served aboard ships as an assistant barkeeper.

He was married in September 1922 to widow Emily Pemberton Kerr, née Barker (b. 1893) and they had a son named Donald two years later. Widowed at a young age, he was remarried in 1935 to Mary Grace Dowell (b. 1905).

Hubert Newbold later left the sea to work as a clerk for a distillery and by 1939 he was living with his family in Formby.

He died on 23 September 1950. At the time he was living at "Heatherlea", Gore's Lane, Freshfield in Formby, Lancashire.
