Florence May Douglas, née Welsh, was born in East Orange, New Jersey on 30 January 1885. She was the daughter of William Burrell Welsh, a merchant, and Anna Olivia Appleby, both of New York. By the time she was a young teenager, both of Florence’s parents had passed away and she lived in Manhattan with an elder sister and other siblings.
She was married on 8 April 1912 to George Angus Douglass, a lumber merchant from New York; the couple planned to honeymoon in Europe and therefore boarded the Carpathia as first class passengers.
After their experiences on the Carpathia, Mr and Mrs Douglass settled in New York and welcomed their only child, George Angus Jr, in January 1913.
