Marconi masts

How exactly did the Marconi wires attached to the masts operate?
I know that there where 4 parallel wires and they also connected to the Marconi room.
Also near to the third funnel, there appears to be a thicker lines of the arial (for example in ken marschall paintings)?
How did the airal work from the tips of the masts?
