It was said at the time that the British Navy asked for permission to sink the Argentinian aircraft carrier, the 25 Mayo, but permission was refused because the ex-RN carrier was not an immediate threat (and her loss would have entailed huge loss of life). At one stage, the 25 Mayo was in port with the British submarine Spartan waiting for her to come out - but after the demise of the Belgrano she never put to sea again.
