Titanic II

LOOK! TITANIC II BROCHURE!

I finally managed to put Maritime International's "Titanic II" brochure up on the "San Francisco Titanica" website, as follows:

content.communities.msn.com/isapi/fetch.dll?action=get_album&ID_Topic=46&ID_Community=jshomispictures

If you can't get to it, click on ET's "Links," then go to "General" and click on "San Francisco Titanica" - - then find the "Titanic II" page.

Unfortunately, the Port Authority faxed me the brochure. I haven't yet received the color pages.

It makes interesting reading. One campy idea was to have Leonardo Di Caprio and Kate Winslet doing their thing on the ship's bow when it passes under the Golden Gate Bridge. I really laughed when I read that.

Joe,

Too fascinating!!! Thanks for sharing this info. I am so excited over the prospect of a Titanic II - with or without (and prefferably without!) Leo & Kate.

Please do keep us posted on this. I think it really could be a reality.

I did see some of the mistakes you talked about in the prospectus - come on, red & black funnels!!! What were they thinking? Didn't they even the see the movie?

All the best,

Randy

Yesterday, I talked to the San Francisco Port Authority, and the Treasure Island developers - - no one has heard anything more about the "Titanic II." The Port Authority spokesperson thought that it was perhaps just a "proposal," and that with all the bad press it got, the thing didn't proceed further. The Treasure Island person simply hadn't even heard of it. Now, with the stock market's collapse, company cutbacks, and layoffs, I think the Bay Area is going to go into a recession --which will put a damper on a lot of projects out there.

I managed to finally get ahold of the Port Authority's project planning group. They described "Titanic II" as "inactive." With what members have described in other posts, it appears that Las Vegas got a leg up on San Francisco on this one. Too bad . . .

I'm sorry, but can't you see what's really going on here? The public interest in Titanic was so huge around the time of the film that it sucked in profiteers for miles around! A working Titanic replica, or any Titanic based attraction for that reason, is simply a money making machine set-up by and for the profit of unscrupulous businessmen.

Think about it, if Titanic Inc and the rest can't even stop squabbling over the legal 'rights' to the wreck itself, this sort of exploitation is bound to happen everywhere. I find it scary that Titanic Inc can do what they've been doing. They've been tearing the wreck apart to furnish their museum and make money. While purporting to be doing their best to 'preserve' the wreck.

Huh, what next? A Disney recreation of the Normandy beaches on D-day!

"Roll up! Roll up! Get your tickets here for the brand new Disneyland D-day ride. Yes, for a mere twenty dollars the Disney corporation will dress you up a a soldier and whisk you across a replica of the English channel in a landing craft. When the ramp drops down you and all the family can enjoy the experience of storming the Normandy beaches under authentic German machine-gun and mortar fire. Real blood an optional extra. Have a nice day!"

It all seems a bit tasteless to me! Take fine colour photographs of the wreck and write serious books about the tragedy that this most famous of ships represents. But leave off the Titanic replicas and amusement park rides please.

Down with all the unnecessarily exploitative, greedy Titanic profiteers out there... Yuck!

Here's another idea that might satisfy all the unnecessarily exploitative, greedy Titanic profiteers out there, without necessarily putting us out. What if they didn't build a floating replica, but instead a land based hotel. They would only have 1st Class rooms, of course, and modern retail could be placed in the funnel shafts (that way, they are discreetly hidden as not to impugn on the period feeling). Modern machinery and facilities could be on E Deck where Scotland Road would have been. There could even be a maritime themed shopping mall in the holds. What would have been 2nd and 3rd Class in the stern could be turned into more rooms, Ballrooms (for weddings, conventions, etc.), restaurants, and/or an extensive maritime museum. Twice a year, there would be a big THS or ET convention that would recreate the voyage (as it should have been). For these events, of course, the retail areas, museum, and extra rooms (the ones that didn't exist) would be closed and sectioned off from the rest of the hotel. The entire exterior would be built EXACTLY as it looked on the real thing. The interior would appear like it did, except, of course, for sprinklers and other necessary safety equipment (all of this would be made as discreet as possible). The hotel would have to be somewhere by the sea and NOT in a major city. This is much more feasible (and A LOT less expensive) than building a full scale floating Titanic II. Could it be done? I know that it won't, but could it?
David
PS-Again, I'm asking only if it could, not if it will be built.

Uh, David. . .guess what? Bob Stupak has been trying to do that in Las Vegas. If you search through the Las Vegas newspapers online, you'll find several articles on this so-far unfulfilled venture. He even went so far as to buy up all the available stock he could in RMS Titanic, Inc., so he could twist George Tulloch's arm into exhibiting all the salvaged artifacts at the as-yet-unbuilt hotel/casino.

Great, why doesn't he just dig up the dead bodies of the Titanic victims buried in Canada and exhibit those in his hotel too!

Call me cynical, but the amount of people out there that try to exploit this tragedy to make a profit is quite disturbing. We must all take a step back and realise that is was a terrible disaster and should be regarded as such...

Gavin,
WHAT'S THIS??? I hadn't heard anything about this. Is there a thread I can catch up on this info? Who's Arnie? Why did George leave? etc.

Oh I'm fully aware of Bob Stupid's (that's my Las Vegan Grandparent's nickname for him) plan to "rebuild" the Titanic on land. It has ABSOLUTLY NOTHING in common with my idea. His ship would somewhat resembles a ship, although it's nothing like the Titanic. Stupak is notorious for repeatedly reverting to the old stereotype of Vegas (the one of sex, money, and dirty old men). Thank God his plan will never go through.

I stumbled across this site whilst I did some homework (Oh hush, it's getting done!). It's about some Titanic thing.

Apparently there's going to be a counseling session or something for the insanely rich folk who travel...

You think the "TLC"'s still go out weekly now that the movie's fervor has calmed?

Josh.
