Who's Moderating the Moderators

Yes. I see your point now. It is a shame the entire thing wasn't deleted, or the entire thing allowed to remain. It seems very odd that it has happened this "partial" way. I still say that Jan is the only one who looks bad here, but I don't see why only half of the thread was erased. I would say, at this point, you guys should either have Jan's removed, or yours replaced. Anything less than that would be unfair and biased, without a VERY GOOD explanation as to the reason. I wouldn't allow myself to be discriminated in a such a manner.
Still...I really have to say again...Bill is a very attractive man. I find nothing wrong with his physical appearance, and I would've just nipped that in the bud early. But, again, I do see where you are coming from...delete it all, or let it all stay. Anything less really is discrimination in my opinion.
I look forward to see what will become of it.
My Best...

It is becoming more and more obvious that the problem provoking the moderator's lack of response is, in all probability, caused by the fact that the moderators don't have any rules. I am a mod on several Titanic forums, and an administrator on two, and in all of these forums I have an identical set of moderator's guidelines, which I hereby post as a possible example to be taken in by ET as a possible suggested moderator's guidelines:

1) Flames, name calling, and any posts vindictive in tone will be immediately deleted and the poster formally warned by IM.

2) There will be no tolerance of political/religious/reincarnation posting. Same warning/suspension rules as flaming.

3) Violation of the rules after three warnings and posts will be deleted, which will affect post count. If they continue, the member is to be suspended for a week, then a month, then six weeks, then six months. If they still persist, they are banned from the board. Permanently.

4) Delete spammers immediately, and ban them.

5) Two off-topic postings and give the thread a warning. Three and the mods start a new thread and move it ourselves to whatever forum sounds appropriate.

Gee, thanks, Angel - I guess you are one!

Jan's comments, other than being rude and uncalled for, don't really affect me much. My life is going in the right direction and getting better all the time, what else can I ask for?

That's what I thought. A friendly gathering of people. Everyone is a little bit older than me but then I get along better with people who are more mature. When I say older I don't mean you are "old" by any means - as being in your 40's and 50's is nothing these days.

Of course not ! 46 is hardly old. Today it's still young. There are a lot of role models to look at. Look at Tom Curise he must be about 44.My mother says she will be 48 for the rest of her life ! So there are plenty of people who would love to swap with you! Anyway I'm getting in the way again.

Back to topic !

The rules of the board are clear and I will reiterate them.

If you have a problem with something posted in a discussion please contact the moderator for that topic.

If the problem relates to the actions of a moderator you may contact the administrator.

To date I have received no communication regarding this matter other than a single message drawing my attention to this thread.

Furthermore:

The board administrator / moderators will not delete posts or threads on demand* but will consider requests to temporarily quarantine threads that have degenerated for some reason. The likelihood is that these will be restored to the board after the dust has settled.

The moderator has made a decision in this matter and that is the end of it.

The moderators are individuals who receive no payment and very little thanks for the work they do on this board. I respect the maturity and consideration they show while they and I acknowledge that lessons can always be learnt and performance in all areas improved.

There have been some constructive comments in this thread together with a great deal of manipulation and coercion. We will certainly reflect on the constructive comments.

"OK PEOPLE!" (said in my best Police Officers tone) "Nothing to see here, keep moving" (pushes crowd back). "Get back in your cars and move along".

Thanks for replying to my E-mail Phil.

sorry to be the one to ask stupid questions, but how do i find out who the moderators are? is there a list or if not where does it sat who the mods are?

As one who, recently (for reasons I won't go into) decided to give ET a rest for a while - I find myself lured back in. No surprise there. I have to say - moderating is not an exact science, and it seems to me it is a fairly thankless one. Why everyone is making such a fuss over Jan Nielsen when we all know what he is like, and really should regard him as a joke, I simply don't know. Has anyone thought about how pedestrian the Board might be without the occasional rogue? Certainly, from the correspondence it generates, it would seem to be fairly vital. You might think you would like a Board without any controversy - but would you really? That's what the moderators have to consider - and it is no use hoping they are going to be able to satisfy everyone all of the time. They can't. When Jan first posted his rude comments about people's appearances, nobody concerned replied - which I think to have been a rather dignified reaction. Some people reproved Jan, and I tried to diffuse the situation by implying he was actually a bit weedy himself. There it should have been left, no doubt, but it wasn't - but so what? I didn't see the removed posts myself, but they sound to have been rather funny and far the best way of dealing with Jan. But if a moderator decided to do it - that's water under the bridge. Leave the moderators be - unless you think you can do better, in which case, I suggest you put yourself up for the job. I think there are many people here who have not thought out the different types of people on the Board. There are diligent researchers, and there are interested surfers. But both have a role in ET's survival, and what may outrage one section of the community may well motivate the other. To quote Tom Pappas (late lamented by many contributors) in one of his most outrageous and passionate moments - "Lighten up!"
Having said all of this, if people really are worried, then I think Lee's suggestions are worthy of consideration.

Mary, click on This Hotlink for a list of who the moderators are and what threads they have control over. For the full text of the Forum Rules, just click on Rules and Netiqette

You'll find this same information above in the taskbar under Contact and Rules.

The end portion of our concern (and I'm talking about quite a few of us) was not Jan Neilsen--but our very good friend Bill Wormstedt. The RIGHT thing to do --for Bill-- was to remove the embarrassing post. I believe Bill was the first person to actively attempt to give Phil Hind information on obscure crew members and there would have been precious little on the site about the crew in those old days had it not been for Bill. Through the years he has been nothing but a loyal friend to all of us and those that have met him personally know how lucky they are to call him a friend. ET and Phil Hind are quite lucky to have him as a contributor. In truth, some of us (Bill's friends) may be more bothered by the post than Bill is (though Bill has made it clear that he doesn't want it to remain). So the bottom line here has not been *just* a demand to remove a post and thereby challenge ET rules, but an attempt to see to it that the RIGHT thing was done in behalf of an individual that deserved it (and hasn't had an easy time of it the past couple of years I might add). The indifference shown to this aspect of what has happened by the moderators and Phil Hind himself is disappointing and embarrassing. Yes we see clearly what the "rule" is now. But imposition of the rule in its strictist form, when it leaves the offending post intact, shows a lack of respect for Bill that is appalling. And while I've held the utmost respect for *almost all* of the moderators, that respect has significantly degraded as a result of all this.

Earlier in this post I mentioned that Bill has been a *loyal* friend to ET. Loyalty on the part of everyone else in Bill's behalf should have been the motivating factor on what happened to the offending post.

Thanks for all the nice things about me, Phil G.

But really, the main issue here is should insults to anyone be left out on the board indefinitely - for any reason? 5 years from now - does anyone need to read a rude comment about my weight? Not in my opinion it doesn't. And I know of far worse things said about other people, that as far as I know, still are out there in the ET message boards. I'd like to see them cleaned up too. Just the removal of a paragraph or two would make me happy, not the removal of an entire thread.

If anything - who looked bad, because of Jan's rude comments? Jan did, according to the people who jumped to my/our defense!

One other point - though Jan did single me out by name, his statement of 'you guys' makes his insult include everyone else at the Symposium, not just me.

Phil H. - thanks for saying that you all are reflecting on the constructive comments.

Gather ye rosebuds while ye may,

For time is still a flying...

And this same rosebud that blooms today,

Tomorrow will be dying.

(or something to that effect)

Moderators have a difficult job when they are executing it properly,

The members here obviously have a passion for the forum itself, and the topic it pertains to,

The diversity of the members makes the posts interesting and informative,

There will always exist fools in the world, and I for one am glad...otherwise, I'd never have a chance to shine...

My point? Yes, there's one. At the risk of being redundant, I am still attempting to be profound.

All those truly affected by what has happened, don't let the apple spoil the bag.

Obviously, not much action will be taken...it hasn't already...and it seems to have been ample time...

But why worry? I will state it yet again...Bill is hot! Seriously. I've shared the picture with my friends, and we all agree...

So this is my thought...

To let it go will be a great injustice...

There is an OBVIOUS injustice here.

Either yours should've stayed, or his should've gone...

It seems common sense, and would hold up in a court of law...

But why allow it spoil your fun? Aren't you just letting this Jan charater win? And at what cost...

The bigger man (and this is a GOOD thing), would just let the dust settle, and I'll tell you why...

Those who do wrong are always brought to justice in one form or another, publicly or privately...

And in the meantime, why stop having your fabulous conversations? Why, I can no longer read them & it is quite a loss considering...

So please, know that one girl in Tennessee hears your charater and agrees 100%, but in the name of good, just let it go. Not because they are right, but because Jan wasn't, and you don't have to be a genious to figure that out.

In the meantime, let me say, that I agree, for a job that doesn't pay, the Moderators that do their job with integrity get far less credit than they deserve, so I celebrate all those good ones that apparently have earned the respect of the well-respected.

I love this forum, and I just joined. Please don't make me suffer on count of Jan...I want to be a part of this good thing. We can always ignore the fools, because we all used to be one at some point or another, and they do infact, make us all look better...

I will get off my soap box permanently about the matter...but consider this please...and thank you all for being so kind to me...

Sincerely

~Angel
