Would crew on the Californian have eaten together?

I heard that Chief Officer Stewart and Lord did, but that seems weird to me.

In my day the officers ate in the Officers' Saloon, the crew in the Crew's Mess. I doubt that a company like Cunard was any different in 1912 - the crew/officers in sailing ships and men of war also messed separately throughout at least the 16th century onwards.
