Bob Read describes handling arrangements for the ship’s heaviest auxiliary anchor, a 15.625-ton Hall’s patent stockless anchor. Required by British Board of Trade regulations, the anchor was rarely used and stored in the forward anchor well on the forecastle deck. Deployment and retrieval required coordination of specialized equipment, including a non-powered anchor crane, hoisting rigging, and a C deck hawser reel.
