Mrs. Estelle Martin, a pretty young woman, who said she was the wife of John A. L. Martin, a real estate operator, was examined yesterday afternoon in supplementary proceedings by Justice Green in the city court, Manhattan, on an action brought by M. Jeanette Brown, a dressmaker, for an alleged bill for $60.48.
"I have no present income," said Mrs. Martin. "I have an allowance from my father, who is in the real estate business. The allowance isn't fixed. He gives me what I want when I want it." She said that although she was not separated from her husband, legally, she has not lived with him since last June. He should be responsible for her debts, she thought. She did not know where he could be found.
"What does it cost you to keep up your house?" asked the attorney for the petitioner. "Seventy dollars a month," she replied. She then detailed that it was expended thus: $35 for rent, $12 for a maid and $23 for running expenses, including the care of her 2-year-old, daughter. Seventy dollars was hardly sufficient, she said, but being a light "breakfaster" and having many invitations to dine out she was able to make it do. The hearing went over until May 13.
