One of the 690 persons who escaped death in the sinking of the ill-fated Titanic in 1912 died Tuesday morning at the Hartford Hospital. She was Miss Susan Webber, 77, of 3 Forest Street, Rocky Hill.
Miss Webber, born in Cornwall, England, July 2, 1874, was 37 years old when she sailed from Southampton, England, in April 1912, on the liner's maiden voyage, bound for New York.
On the night of April 14, the Titanic struck an iceberg. Because of her water-tight compartments, she had been thought unsinkable. But the damage was too severe. A second tragedy was the fact there were too few lifeboats--only 14. Miss Webber had the good fortune to be assigned to the thirteenth. When the liner sank from view, only 690 of the 2,207 passengers and crewmen survived.
Miss Webber was rescued by the liner Carpathia after six hours in the lifeboat. She lived in Rocky Hill with her nephew Charles E. Webber until her death. She was a member of the Rocky Hill Congregational Church and Rocky Hill Grange. The funeral will be held at the Taylor and Modeen Funeral Home, 233 Washington Street, Thursday at 2:30 P.M. with burial in Center Cemetery, Rocky Hill. Friends may call at the funeral home after 6 P.M. today.
"Autumn," the selection played by Titanic bandsmen when the ship sank, was chosen by Miss Kathleen Webber of Rocky Hill, a niece, as the music for the funeral. Besides Miss Kathleen Webber and Charles Webber, the deceased leaves another niece, Mrs. William Worth of Hartford.
