Cablegram to Morris P Kirk Indicates Passage on the Ill-Fated Boat.

That Jobn Weir, formerly president of the Nevada-Utah Mines & Smelters corporation, was a passenger on the in-starred Titanic and that he has been one of the hundreds who perished, is considered certain by his many Salt Lake friends. Morris P. Kirk, the engineer who was general manager of the Binghnm property of this organization during the presidency of Mr. Weir, received a cablegram from London Thursday bearing the two words. "Weir, Titanic."

Mr. Kirk infers naturally from this that Mr. Weir was one of the several mentioned who went aboard the vessel at the last moment and whose names were, not included on the London Office register.  As Mr. Weir's name does not appear among the list of passengers rescued, he unquestionably was one of the unfortunates who went down with the ship.

Also Receives Letter.

By a peculiar trick of fate. Mr. Kirk received also on Thursday a letter from Mr. Weir, written in London on April 6, in which it was stated that M. Weir would likely sail from England on the ship Philadelphia, which was scheduled to leave within a day or two. He intended to proceed to Salt Lake, the letter stated, where Mr. Kirk was to have joined him in a trip to look over some California, mining propositions in the Feather river country.

Mr. Weir will be recalled bv numerous Salt Lakers as one of the finest looking and most kindly disposed men with whom they ever came in contact. The years had left him gray, but his heart was young and his strong body retained without a hint of the years it bore the straight lines of tbe typical soldier.  He will be remembered by the hotel attaches as one of the truest believers of Christmas and the Christmas spirit, as he remembered at each Yuletide his friends with substantial tokens of bis regard.

Member of Alta Club.

Mr. Kirk stated last evening that John Weir will be remembered for the good he has done wherever his influence has extended.  He was born in Scotland, where he has a daughter and sister living. During the past few years he had lived in England and Scotland to enjoy the fortune made during his long years of western mining, taking frequent trips into the old spots to brush up on developments and to find something previously overlooked. He was a frequent visitor to this city and was always easily reached at his Knutsford rooms by the representative of the press

Mr Weir was appointed quartermaster general by President McKinley during the Spanish-American war and served in the Philippines.  He was a member of the Alta Club of this City.
