Our Belfast Correspondent telegraphed last night:

At a special meeting of the Belfast City Council yesterday, Alderman Pirrie, a director of the firm of Harland and Wolff, was unanimously nominated Lord Mayor for 1896. One of the councillors expressed the hope that Alderman Pirrie would use his influence to bring the strike to an end. Alderman Pirrie, in returning thanks, promised to do his utmost to preserve the interests of the city.

[Note: At the time this article was written, a strike by shipyard employees in Glasgow and Belfast was in progress.]
