PHYSICIANS' BULLETIN ADMITS CRISIS
---
ROME, March 30---The physicians attending J. Pierpont Morgan issued the
following bulletin this evening:
"A week ago Mr. Morgan was persuaded to go to bed and remain there, to
conserve his strength. Until Wednesday afternoon he did very well under
this regimen; he rested and slept without the aid of drugs and took a
satisfactory amount of nourishment.
"Wednesday afternoon he began to refuse food, and since then it has been
impossible to nourish him. He has lost weight and strength very rapidly.
His nervous system is showing this, and it has added to the strain
seriously.
"Mr. Morgan has not developed any organic trouble, but is so exceedingly
weak that his present condition must be considered most critical. (Signed.)
"G. BASTIANELLI,
"M. ALLEN STARR,
"G. A. DIXON."

ROME, March 30---At last the barrier is down that has concealed the real
condition of J. Pierpont Morgan, and the physicians attending the New York
financier and his son-in-law, Herbert L. Satterlee, are telling the facts,
which indicate that Mr. Morgan is critically ill.
Even up to Saturday night Mr. Satterlee had insisted that Mr. Morgan was in
absolutely no danger, adding that he was enjoying his food. The physicians
meanwhile were non-committal.
Now even Mr. Satterlee has admitted that unless some unexpectedly favorable
turn comes in his father-in-law's case, a fatal issue is expected.
The present condition of Mr. Morgan is almost desperate, owing to his
extreme prostration, which causes those about him to fear an occurrence of
heart failure. Nourishment is being injected to maintain his strength,
together with drugs, which are thought necessary because he has not had any
natural sleep since Wednesday.
Mr. Morgan makes no complaint and does not suffer other than from extreme
weakness. It is impossible to judge whether he realizes his condition or
not. It is supposed that he does not, as he takes no notice of any one.
The doctors and nurses do not leave him alone for an instant, either day or
night.
The gravity of Mr. Morgan's condition is just becoming known here, and has
caused a great stir. A feeling of great anxiety pervades the American colony
and the ranks of Roman society, where he is equally popular.
The news of Mr. Morgan's dangerous state has caused the keenest regret at
the Vatican, where he is held in the highest esteem.
