Mrs. Wadia Nakid says that she and her husband, who was carrying their one-year-old child, went up on deck, and waited to get into one of the lifeboats. An officer told her to come forward, but didn’t want to let her husband come with her, and the officer actually tried to take the child away from him. But the baby clutched her arms around his neck and didn’t want to let him go. Apparently touched by the child’s affection, he placed me in the boat, and then told my husband to get into the boat with the child. I don’t know the officer’s name. He was probably a father himself, or he wouldn’t have been so sensitive to the child’s affection.
