The Late Colonel Weir: A Lover of Horses

It may interest your readers to know (writes a correspondent) that the Colonel John Weir referred in your columns of yesterday as one of those who ignored a presentiment as to the fate of the Titanic, was a Scot by birth and descent, and only became a naturalised American citizen for business reasons; and, further, that he has been domiciled in this country for some time, and is the owner of the famous Ingleholm estate. North Berwick, with other landed estates in this country. His eldest daughter, Beatrice, is married to Mr. D. F. C. Steuart-Seton, the former Conservative and Unionist candidate for West Islington. 

A Lover of Horses 

Colonel Weir was a great lover of horses, and founded the Melbourne Racing Club and introduced into Australia the first batch, of trotting horses; incidentally he promoted and built the Melbourne Tramways, and later the Madras Railways; and, upon what has proved be his last voyage, was, in association with Mr. Guggenheim and Mr. Isidor Straus, hastening to America complete huge deals in Alaska and Mexico. Colonel Weir leaves property estimated worth 1,700,000.
