Funeral of Titanic victim

Timothy J McCarthy buried today.

Many hundreds, including the mayor, at Saint Matthew's Church

Profusion of flowers sent by his associates.

Few more impressive funeral possessions have passed through the streets of Dorchester than that of this morning, when the body of Timothy J McCarthy, one of the victims of the Titanic tragedy, was escorted from his home, 52 Nelson st. New Dorchester, Boston, to Saint Matthew's Church on Stanton st. less than a mile away.

Preceded by a detail of his business associates with the Jordan Marshall company as pallbearers, the cottage left the home at 9 o'clock and went through Norfolk st. to Stanton st. the thoroughfares being thronged with people, who stood in respectful silence, hundreds of whom had known Mr McCarthy.

Within the church were gathered many hundreds, including about 800 employees of the Jordan Marsh Company, representing the 3000 employed in all the departments of the great store. Others represented business and political circles of Dorchester. Met John F Fitzgerald arrived during the services.

At 10 am a solemn high mass of requiem was celebrated by Rev John V. Cronan of Saint Matthew's Church, with Rev Walter F Sweeney as deacon and Rev Patrick J Lyons, chaplain at the Carney Hospital and pastor of the night workers chapel, as subdeacon. Rev John a Donnelly, pastor of the church, was master of ceremonies. The musical portion of the service was sung by the regular members of the choir under the direction of Miss Cecilia Gleason, organist; assisted by Mrs William Johnstone, soprano; Miss Harriet Haskins, alto; Arthur Henderson, tenor; Ludwig C. Fichtner, bass; Miss Kathryn Roberts, soprano, and Mrs Joseph Kirby, soprano.

Within the chancel rail were Reverend James FT me of the Church of the Sacred Heart, Newton Centre, Reverend Thomas I Gasson of Boston College; reverend William H Fitzpatrick of Saint Gregory's Church, Dorchester lower Mills, and monsignor Peter London, PR of Saint Peters Church, Meetinghouse Hill, who officiated at the wedding of Mr and Mrs McCarthy nearly 25 years ago.

The esteem in which Mr McCarthy was held was partly attested by the floral tributes, which filled an open carriage that's good outside the church during the services, among them a large myth sent by Nia Fitzgerald; "Gates Ajar," from employees of Jordan Marsh company; a massive relief from Mrs Robert Jordan and a mound of white pinks inscribed, "to a hero" from the children of the neighbourhood of the McCarthy home, schoolmates of the two boys in the family.

The ushers at the church with John McGrath, George Layton, John Riley, Walter Lundon, employees of the Jordan Marsh Company, and the pallbearers were George L Schneider, William are Lohan, William A Hooper, Thomas F Lockney, E.A. Pitman, E.H. Bell, Henry J. Daley and Timothy J Sullivan.

The large crowd outside the church at Office was handled by a detail of police under Lieutenant JamesF Wilkins.

Following the services at the church, the cortege reformed and proceeded to Calvary cemetery, where interment took place, in the presence of a large gathering of friends and business associates.

From an Unidentified Newspaper, same date:
