Mr Richard McMullan was born in Clough, Co Down, Ireland on 19 July 1892.1 He was the son of labourer Samuel McMullen and the former Agnes Johnston and he hailed from a Roman Catholic family that later settled in Belfast.
The middle of five children, Robert’s father died when he was young and his mother took to linen millwork to support her brood. The family appear on the 1911 census as residents of 19 Marine Street in north Belfast with Robert being described as an unmarried labourer.
McMullan’s ship prior to Titanic had been the Olympic. He joined Titanic at Belfast for the delivery trip to Southampton where he then disembarked.
Richard was married in Holy Trinity Church on 7 September 1912 to Mary Jane McGee. Between then and 1918 he worked as a driller in the shipyards before he enlisted with the Royal Navy and served as a stoker aboard Pembroke II until his eventual demobilisation following the end of the war.
Richard spent his final days working as a driller at the ship works, with his home being at 7 Ship Street.
He died on 15 March 1951 but his resting place is unknown.
