Alfred Ossian Gustafsson

Mr Alfred Ossian Gustafsson was born in Karlby, Kökar, Åland Islands, Finland on 12 May 1892.

He was the son of Gustaf Albert Adolf Gustafsson (b. 1864) and Olivia Angelina Karlström (b. 1862) who had married on 25 March 1886. He had two known siblings: Johan (b. 1890) and Amanda (b. 1903). It is believed his mother died whilst he was still young.

Alfred and his family had emigrated around 1898, settling in Waukegan, Illinois where his father worked in the steel mills. In late 1911 or early 1912 he returned to his native Kökar to pay a visit. Gustafsson, who was unmarried, was described as a general labourer.

Most of the Finns travelled to England via Hangö but Gustafsson came via Gothenburg, Sweden on the Calypso and for this reason he was recorded as a Swede on several lists. He boarded the Titanic in Southampton as a third class passenger (ticket number 7534 which cost £9, 16s, 11d).

Alfred died in the sinking and his body, if recovered, was never identified.

His father remained in Waukegon and died there on 12 October 1939.
