Francesco Zammuto

RMS Carpathia Passenger

Mr Franceso Zammuto was born in Aragona, Sicily, Italy on 22 January 1887.1 He was the son of Giuseppe Zammuto and Assunta Salamone.

Around 1905 Francesco emigrated to the USA, settling in Rockford, Illinois where he worked in a knitting works with his cousin Angelo Zammuto and later his younger brother Raimondo. 

Francesco was headed to Sicily to be married when he and his brother Raimondo travelled as third class passengers aboard the Carpathia when that ship rescued the survivors of the Titanic disaster. 

Francesco was married in Sicily to Maria Galluzzo (1894-1937) before he returned to the US in April 1913, later being joined by Maria. They raised a family together and Francesco worked as a butcher and became a naturalised US citizen in 1939. 

Francesco “Frank” Zammuto died in Rockford on 6 November 1953 and was buried in in St Mary and St James’ Cemetery in that city.
