Sundowner

A bit of a surprise the other day I just turned-on TV and watch Smithsonian Channel Combat Ships. Up come Sundowner and that story of what that daring man Charles Lightoller was, indeed so. Who was ask by the Government to do spying on the German coastline with Sundowner before the start of the War 2. Had the nerve to straight into the bay where the German Navy was base. Looking though one of his port windows was taking notes and mapping with depth reading to. He would be confronted by the German Navy but manage to fob them off as innocent tourist. Yet in his boat was bags of spying martials and if found would have been shot with his wife too. When looking into his book Titanic and Other Ships there is no mention of Sundowner boat activity! Or had he signed the Official Secrets Act not to tell all? His activity for the Dunkirk operation was quite an eye open to where the boat had only ever carried no more than twenty people yet managed to rescue 130 soldiers under enemy fire back to Ramsgate port. All this was well covered in the program. Those who may have catch up worth watching. What an amazing man he was.
